Overview: The evidence cited below is not a response for a single firm. It reflects academic studies made using significant databases of large firms in the UK in both the manufacturing and service sectors. Very little was known about the role of intangible business assets in service sectors producing intangible products, such as finance and insurance, even though firms in these sectors are frequently engaged in product and process innovation and have strong interests in the marketing and protection of good reputations for their new brands. For this reason we undertook to monitor the creation of Intellectual Property (IP) assets in services, to estimate the value of these assets to services firms and to compare the findings with those for manufacturing firms.
