Overview: The multinationalization of production is perhaps the most striking and distinguishing characteristic of the process of globalization over the last two decades. The share of cross-border capital flows accounted for by the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of multinationals has been rising in last few years. This paper examines the relationship between foreign investment in Europe and labor market outcomes. How is the multinationalization of production likely to affect the level and distribution of wages and employment? What are its consequences for the volatility of labor market outcomes and the perceptions of risk among workers? Does foreign ownership make a difference for how firms and workers share profits?
