Overview: For many companies, the daunting amount of time, money, and people required to manage the traditional active/passive server configurations in their data centers has made managing resources and service availability harder, not easier. Industry-standard hardware and virtualization technologies promise to reduce the traditional requirement of one passive server for each active server in production; however, the cost and expertise needed to support these technologies often make their implementation impractical. Additionally, extremes in resource utilization and provisioning not only continue, they are compounded. This paper discusses how companies can use asset optimization management to achieve maximum availability, scalability, and performance in their data centers.
