Overview: Uncertainty is the enemy of any business, a fact that John Wilhelmsen knows too well. In 1992, he visited a local bank to discuss refinancing the building that housed Distinct Impressions, a screen printing business that he started with his brothers, Mark and Bruce, in 1979. Although the company had enjoyed steady growth since then, John could not answer many of the banker's questions about his business's financial standing and performance. Unsatisfied with his replacement, the brothers decided that they had better start learning the business side of being business owners. SCORE counselor Irving Kaplan analysed revealed several inaccuracies and gaps in the company's books, plus other discrepancies that would hinder the brothers' ability to secure any future loans.
