Overview: The paper addresses some aspects of the evolution towards broadband telecommunication services, underlining the importance of these services in the development and economic growth of all countries. The experience of France Telecom in the domain could serve as a kind of reference horizon and perhaps give ideas to operators preparing their own network development strategies. Broadband services, like video-on-demand, e-learning, telemedicine, interactive games, advanced mobile services, generally involve bulky data transfer or require particular network performances. High-speed Internet Protocol networks, ATM connections, Wireless Fidelity (WiFi), leased lines, provide access or support to broadband services. This paper analyses some of these services and support networks, giving more details for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), which is a technique widely used to access broadband services.
