Overview: A major energy provider issues wireless portable computers to its field technicians so they can instantly report the status of a service call to the dispatcher. When trees topple or limbs fall during a storm, service crews dispatched to the scene can provide a detailed description of the damage in real time over a robust data communications network. While dispatching, status reporting and emergencies may require wireless data exchanges, items such as proof-of-delivery signatures and parts used during the day can usually wait until the end of the day and be sent to the server over a phone dial up service or wired network connections.
