Overview: Keeping in touch with their field workforces is a major concern for utility companies and other network businesses. The problem is a cause of low productivity, and the lack of timely and relevant asset data from the field hampers maintenance planning. Mobile Workforce Management (MWF) offers a solution to these problems. New and affordable technologies such as wireless networks, rugged portable computing devices and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) can enable MWF transformation initiatives to deliver benefits equivalent to 20 percent of controllable costs or more. This paper focuses on the challenges of implementing MWF in utility companies and is based on our practical experience from multiple client projects.
