Overview: In this paper we examine empirically the association between organization type on the one hand and organization structure, organizational behavior, and organizational performance on the other hand, focusing on different types of organization that coexist in the same industry. We consider for-profit, nonprofit and government nursing homes (of the skilled facility variety), and focus on a single region, the state of Minnesota, to exclude influences associated with geographic heterogeneity detected in many studies, as well as to control for the legal and regulatory, including enforcement, environment, which varies considerably across states. The paper is unique in its examination of the chain of associations extending from organization type to structure, behavior and performance.
