Overview: Return on investment (ROI) analysis of business intelligence (BI) can be a useful technique for evaluating alternatives, but only if the process is rigorous and evaluates all of the true costs over the life cycle of the technology. Incomplete and inconsistent models can lead to false positives, such as favorable-looking scenarios that are in fact just the opposite. Because BI, including data warehousing, represents a family of tools and techniques, it is common in the industry to build these applications incrementally and to integrate a large number of technologies. The common term for this approach is 'Best of breed,' though in many cases, that description may be too optimistic. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issues in these decisions using a return-on-investment approach.
