Overview: The Logistics industry is undergoing radical transformation as retail organisations focus on core competencies, outsource many of their logistics operations and explore online channels. Ongoing research into this transformation process has identified a new breed of "e-fulfilment" providers with a specific set of capabilities. These capabilities can be described using a staged e-business transformation model. Discernible movement towards increased knowledge-based capabilities is evident. This paper reports on quantitative changes in an index of transformation previously developed by the authors, suggesting significant transformation from physical to knowledge based activities. These changes will have long-term impacts not only on the Logistics industry but also on all online retail operations.
