Overview: This paper on transport logistics attempts to systematize the links between transportation logistics and supply chain operations. It identifies the elements of these processes and draws attention to significant factors and variables governing these processes. As transportation logistics is in its formative and dynamic stage, we have considerable information on the practices of firms, most of which are "Learning by doing". Our knowledge of transportation logistics is thus rich in case experience and limited in standardized information. The role of logistics in globalization is discussed in the paper. The characteristics of transportation logistics and the spatial consequences are also explored. The paper concludes by highlighting some potential trends and emphasizes data needs.
