Overview: Knowledge Management "KM", as a buzzword, is not even new. It first showed up on the management radar with the promise to make full use of the accumulated knowledge in the firm through comprehensive documental databases and exhaustive classifications or "Ontologies". That drive is in the root of most modern document management systems. It has not harnessed the firm's knowledge (rather filled terabytes with outdated documents), but it enabled the digitalisation of business process information. It planted the seed of the modern almost-paperless, e-enabled firm that believes in "Enterprise content management".
