Overview: The standards a self-employed professional sets are mostly of his or her own making. Professional associations demand compliance with ethical standards of behavior. Other than that, the person sets expectations of himself or herself and then develops his or her own standards for measuring the success or failure of his or her efforts. Colleagues give the person a yardstick to measure himself or herself against, but comparisons can be misleading.
