Overview: The UK has a fairly long history of generous defined benefit pension provision. The schemes remain - now mostly restricted to employees with long tenures - with newer employees being placed in defined contribution arrangements. Against this backdrop, there were some well-publicised plan failures that led to legislation designed to tighten governance of pensions, funding guarantees, and benefit security (including a new mandatory insurance scheme against insolvency). Measures have also been established to simplify the detail for pension contributions to qualify for tax relief.
