Overview: The most common approach to dealing with globally mobile employees is to maintain participation of those employees within the home country arrangements when they are moved on assignment. In fact, many multinationals base their entire expatriate benefits policy on this "One-size-fits-all" approach. But it is not always possible to maintain participation in a home country plan. For example, a member of a Swiss plan will be deemed to have left service once he or she starts an assignment outside of Switzerland. If the home country option is not appropriate, then the host country is another obvious solution. This will often be a desirable option for tax reasons, particularly where the host country operates an attractive portable pension arrangement.
