Overview: It is a tale of woe: a combination of high crude oil prices, OPEC's attempts at production control, a mild winter in Europe and the US, reduced demand for aviation fuel together with a spluttering world economy have led to a terrible time for refiners. European refinery margins recently hit a 15 year low. It is evident that many of the factors that affect refinery margins are outside the control of the refinery owner.
