Overview: The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to evaluate the role of accounting in the establishment of a hospital environmental management system. To do so, the authors' investigate the interactions between the accounting function, defined here as the Chief Financial Officer, and others known to have some responsibility for establishing an environmental agenda: the Chief Executive, Environmental Health and Safety, and Materials Management (Purchasing) Officers. Survey data from respondents in each of these departments was collected from private and non-profit hospitals in Florida.
