Overview: A voluntary system of central registration of cancers has been in operation throughout England and Wales since 1971. Regional cancer registries ascertain details of cancer diagnoses from hospitals and other sources in their areas and forward these to the National Cancer Intelligence Centre (formerly the National Cancer Registration Bureau), which is part of the OYce for National Statistics. After validation, registrations are forwarded to the National Health Service Central Register (NHSCR), which is also part of the OYce for National Statistics. NHSCR is the main source for notification to epidemiological researchers of cancers diagnosed throughout England and Wales.
