Overview: Vantage 1.5 Tesla 60cm diameter (Toshiba) Increasingly, obesity is impacting the ability to perform MRI studies. The impact on MR imaging is twofold: the ability to fit patients on MR scanners and the ability to acquire quality images. Although standard clinical practice has been to refer large patients to vertical field open configuration MR magnets, there is often a trade off between image quality, range of applications and the ability to accommodate larger patients. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these restrictions as well as propose new MR imaging solutions for the underserved obese population in the United States.
