Overview: Companies all around the industrialized world invest large amounts of money and other resources annually in the adoption, development and maintenance of corporate intranets. Despite the resources invested, the intranets are often reported to be underutilized, or the communication via the intranet has been failing to meet the needs of its users. Some of these business communications related problems are assumed to result from poor intranet content management or ineffective content creation processes. This paper points out that large multinational companies operating in Finland are well aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the two opposite content creation approaches identified by academic researchers, and are creating intranet content in a manner that combines the advantages of corporate control as well as collaboration through distributed content creation.
