Overview: On May 4, 2006 the U.S. Postal Service announced a rate case filing with the Postal Rate Commission. Should this filing be granted, standard postage costs will increase 9 percent, the second increase in just 5 months. In addition, many industry experts expect to see larger rate increases consistent with this proposal in the coming years. The implication for direct marketers is simple. If postal rates go up, direct marketing budgets will be less capable of delivering marketing messages to the intended audiences. Direct mail and postal list rental will become a less cost-effective medium. Marketers will need to consider viable alternatives such as email. This whitepaper outlines the direct vs. email challenge and provides ways that email can enhance offline direct marketing efforts.
