Overview: There are two contradictory schools of thought on conditions in this country's labor market if one listens to public discussion today. There is the view that the U.S. job market is weak and troubling. The other view is that economic growth is solid and stellar, and productivity is what has delayed the hiring of workers temporarily. Well, which is it? Is the economy steaming along? Or is everyone in the midst of an unsustainable, jobless recovery? One employment survey supports the sanguine view, but another indicates continued slack in the labor market. This paper examines the current employment puzzle about job growth.
