Overview: Economic landscape is changing, as new players, with new business concepts and organizational designs, are gaining ground, and globalisation, trade liberalisation and regional integration are leading to a redefinition of the geographic location of economic activities. This process is inherently international, leading to company reconfiguration, in terms of value chains, and new patterns of activities carried out abroad. In this business context, divestment is recording an increasing trend. In recent years there is a new breed of research on international divestment decisions, namely as a consequence of the problems faced by joint-ventures and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, and the increasing outsourcing of manufacturing activities. The present paper endeavours to combine these strands of research although drawing mainly on international business and strategy perspectives.
