Overview: SOX requires an anonymous method for employees to report concerns related to accounting and financial matters and the adoption of a code of ethical conduct designed to promote prompt reporting of code violations. Many U.S. companies maintain subsidiaries and employees in the European Union where the anonymous hotlines and other reporting mechanisms are now in place; those same companies must now consider data protection, labor and human rights legislation in the European Union, as well as the underlying historical stigma attached to the interpretation of a whistleblower as an informer.
