Overview: This paper aims to show that the damage done by terrorism can be empirically measured. In recent years, economic scholars have analyzed the effects terrorist acts have on various aspects of the economy and society. The paper briefly discuss how the extent of terrorism is measured and the most important trends in international terrorism. The paper assesses empirical studies on the impact of terrorism on tourism, foreign direct investment, savings and consumption, investments, stock markets, foreign trade, urbanization and overall economic development, including the costs of the attacks of September 11, 2001.
