Overview: The first leans toward the use of project management software, which is designed to manage the granular details of project life cycles, resources, and budgets. Maintaining a focus on the critical specifics of the individual projects, however, comes somewhat at the expense of the "Big picture." These solutions excel in the day-to-day management of project details, not so much in managing an entire portfolio of IT investments. The second school of thought prefers software solutions aimed at portfolio management. These provide strategic optimization and prioritization, but they lack depth in the granular management of project information. While both types of software offer value within their respective niches, CIOs have found that the best solution is to integrate both types for use as an IT governance strategy.
