Overview: In large organisations with high volumes of transactions the processes are more or less under control because sophisticated and expensive computer systems have been implemented. But for smaller firms, or individual departments in large organisations with unique requirements, the up-front cost has been too high. Ad-hoc solutions have been developed using lots of paper, manila folders, faxes, emails and possibly some computerisation - using tracking spreadsheets or tasks included with email systems. The trouble with these solutions is they are not industrial strength, they do not scale and they are difficult to connect to other computer systems.
