Overview: In a large project, you may have many people with some degree of responsibility for completing certain deliverables. It might be just one person writing a document and one person approving it. But it's often more complicated than that, with several people having a hand in the creation and others having varying levels of approval.

This responsibility matrix, created by project management expert Tom Mochal, will help you lay out the type of involvement of each person (or job role) for the various aspects of a project, such as Project Definition and Business Requirements. For example, your Project Definition document might be created by the project manager, reviewed by the project team, and approved by the project sponsor, project director, and the steering committee.
