Overview: Many of the challenges countries and regions of the world are facing in such areas as sustainable development, economic growth; health care, education and agricultural production are increasingly subsumed to a common denominator: developing knowledge societies and economies. While the process towards knowledge societies is driven to a large extent by the industrialized countries, it is now widely recognized that "Catching up" depends crucially on each country acquiring, developing, managing and properly applying appropriate knowledge.
