Overview: Medical education has long consisted of courses in the basic sciences, medicine, and surgery, with patient care being learned in clinical and hospital rotations. Business management courses are not included in undergraduate medical curriculae, and CME credits are not offered for students during the practice years. Business management training is considered to be peripheral, even irrelevant, to the practice of medicine; however, a majority of the issues challenging the healthcare system today, such as higher costs, lower quality, inadequate reimbursement, increased numbers of medical errors and uninsured patients, and a recent trend towards the rationing of care, are all related to business management and operational issues, not medical ones.
