Overview: In the aftermath of deregulation, a regional energy company's mantra had changed: monopoly pricing and guaranteed margins were out; growth and profitability were in. After a merger undertaken to add to capabilities and increase market share, this supplier of gas, electric, hydro, and nuclear energy asked Mercer to design a new pay program for the combined $15 billion organization. Mercer suggested that a new compensation plan, with an education component that showed employees how their jobs relate to the bottom line, would contribute meaningfully to the company's future growth and profitability.
