Overview: The e-business subsidiary of a Fortune 100 company had experienced rapid growth over the first two years. It had been relying on the management and compensation systems of its parent company, but these were proving inadequate and the subsidiary was having difficulty attracting and motivating employees. Rather than piggyback on the parent company's traditional salary grades and ranges, management decided to implement a new salary structure that would allow employees to move laterally within and across departments as their job responsibilities changed. Mercer interviewed senior managers to understand all job functions and responsibilities. Mercer then did external benchmarking of other e-businesses and reviewed total compensation surveys of dot-coms to get a handle on typical base salaries and bonus levels.
