Overview: This paper briefly examines the notion of (Human Resource Management) HRM and its different meanings and emphasises its importance. It argues that increasing internationalisation raises two key, linked, issues for HR specialists. On the first of these, the question of how different HRM is in different countries, both similarities and differences are found - and the differences are significant. On the second issue, the question of how organisations that operate internationally can afford to manage HRM the same way in different countries by transferring successful HRM practices from one to another, the paper finds that there are arguments, and evidence, on both sides. What organisations attempt to transfer, and how they do it, is crucial.
