Overview: Today there are 33 million working age Americans with disabilities and 14.5 million of them are unemployed. Of those who are unemployed, two out of three would prefer to be working. Yet the unemployment rate for working-age adults with disabilities has remained at 70% for more than a decade. One solution is assistive technology - an essential tool for helping people with disabilities participate more fully in productive work. This paper discusses the role of assistive technology in the workplace and includes case studies showing how assistive technology is making employment possible for people who otherwise might not be able to work.
