Overview: In terms of the movement of presenteeism to absenteeism, depression is estimated to be a primary factor in about 6% to 7% of UnumProvident's short-term disability (STD) claims. Depression also shows up as a strong determining factor for job performance. It also was described as causing the highest average self-reported productivity loss (7.6%) among nine disabling conditions in a Lockheed Martin-Tufts Medical Center study reported in the October 2004 Harvard Business Review. It's critical that there be coordination between employee assistance programs and disease management efforts with an eye toward collaborative intervention when dealing with depression.
