Overview: The paper has three broad components. Firstly, briefly outline the environment that currently characterises South African economy. One details here issues related to the macro economy and the trade regime, both of which are particularly important within the context of globalization. The second section of the paper will provide a descriptive overview of the labour market between 1995 and 1999, in an attempt at understanding shifts that may have occurred in the liberalization period. The third segment of the paper goes on to analyse the legislation framework for labour market policy. Emphasis is given to the four key pieces of legislation that capture the basic tenets of labour market policy in South Africa.
