Overview: This paper provides a basic overview of the human resource management functions performed in organizations, comparing and contrasting these functional areas from the perspective of small and large organizations. This comparison is done by virtue of the functions defined by the Society for Human Resource Management and includes: Employment, Placement, and Human Resource Planning; Training and Development; Compensation and Benefits; Employee and Labor Relations; Occupational Safety, Health, and Security; and Human Resource Research. Ultimately, the paper concludes with a discussion on employee handbooks and how these should be used to communicate human resource policies and procedures.
