Overview: 'Diversity' is stirring up the UK civil service. It is now an integral part of the current UK civil service reform agenda. specifically, the civil service has been charged with making a 'Dramatic improvement' in diversity within the service. The importance of diversity and effective diversity management is also acknowledged in the recent government publication Workforce Development Plan for Central Government. There is also clearly a notable shift in the level of political support for diversity actions. Numerous initiatives abound in the wake of this increased attention to diversity matters in the civil service. This paper intends to describe the main features of the UK civil service's diversity and equality agenda, specifically in relation to employment and management practice.
