Overview: The management of the HR function within a firm is not a core business activity, but nevertheless, it cuts across all processes within a company. Today, the prevailing trend is towards outsourcing non-core processes, and the HR function is no exception. In the past, separate elements of the HR function have been outsourced. Service providers have specialised in single processes such as payroll management or benefits administration. The new trend that is appearing is towards a more integrated approach, in which more HR processes are outsourced together. The new catchphrase is 'Human capital management'.
