Overview: When ergonomics principles are applied to the workplace and job tasks, many aspects of the operation can be improved. While program sustainability and success vary considerably, one key element of successful ergonomics programs is the selection and application of measures to focus and guide all improvement efforts toward a single goal. This paper provides guidelines and examples of establishing and using effective measures to drive an ergonomics improvement process. Injury/illness rate, lost time, and cost of injuries are traditional safety measures used by organizations. The information is easy to track, readily available, and required for Federal recordkeeping. Injury costs and lost time rates are easily obtained through the Workers' Compensation system.
