Overview: The study outlined in this paper builds operational definitions of relationship types by empirically considering which relationship characteristics act as defining attributes. This paper accomplishes that task by identifying the characteristics that relationship managers see as key to the distinctions between the actual relationships they manage. Specifically, the paper aims to answer questions such as: do trust, frequency of interaction, and commitment to the relationship really help to uniquely define different types of relationships; are there consistent groupings of relationships with relatively unique combinations of these "Defining" characteristics, and if so, what should these groups be called?
