Overview: It is important to scan the environment and keep track of external developments which may affect the organisation. One important tool is the PEST analysis. This helps to look at the environment from a political (often includes legal), economic, social and technological perspective and what impact these variables may have on future work. For example, A PEST analysis, looking at the external environment, is often used together with a SWOT analysis. SWOT helps to identify the organisation's strengths and weaknesses and spot any opportunities and threats in the external environment.
