Overview: This paper analyzes if managers are recruited by matching their background with strategy requirements. The prediction power of existing industrial organization theory hypotheses and developed resource-based view hypotheses are tested on a sample of Swedish top managers. Results show that individual variables, such as an individual's demographic similarity to the top management team, are correlated with a higher hierarchical position. However, a specific strategic background seems more of a liability, in that such a background has an almost entirely negative correlation with a higher hierarchical position.
