Overview: In the attempt to grasp the role of nation states in international assessments this paper employs three criteria which have been identified as being relevant for an assessment's effectiveness in the political process. Firstly, the design of the science-policy interface is crucially important not only for the effectiveness of the assessment itself but also for the possible influence national governments could have on the assessment process and through that on international politics. Secondly, the simple presence of governmental representatives in the process has been found as a fruitful criterion for the measurement of the influence process in order to be able to influence the process. Thirdly, the design of conflict resolution mechanisms in assessment processes seems relevant for the influence of nation state governments.
