Overview: After two years of flat growth, the online advertising market grew 10 percent in 2003, fueled by a 50 percent surge in paid search spending. Growth will continue at a rate of 19 percent compounded annually through 2008, when overall online ad spending will reach $14.8 billion. Paid search is the most influential factor driving growth and recovery of the market for online advertising. Other drivers influencing the recovery include continued online adoption, broadband penetration, and increased investment in rich media ads, greater inventory control, and impending cannibalization of off-line direct marketing by performance based online ads. Spending for paid search surpassed spending for online classifieds in 2003.
