Overview: The popular image of the Aboriginal leader is one carved out of Canada's "history" of myths and legends, of the tenacious, savage and brave warrior. The warrior mentality still exists for Aboriginal leaders as we attempt to regain our place in Canadian society. The "warrior" is grounded by a strong set of values and behavioural systems govern leadership based on thousands of years of teachings that reinforce our cultural identities. For Aboriginal leaders, it is important to be grounded in these values-based teachings as the basis of a strong identity. This paper will attempt to answer how Aboriginal identity, as the basis of Aboriginal leadership, is balanced and negotiated with traditional and contemporary value systems.
