Overview: For at least two decades, in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez and Bhopal disasters, corporations have been facing mounting external and internal pressure to manage environmental resources and risks effectively. To address the queries and concerns of managers, corporate boards and other stakeholders, codified management, audit and reporting schemes have been introduced and implemented, substantial segments of the consulting industry and of business school training have turned to identify and convey best practices across firms, and a thriving research literature has explored, developed, put to scrutiny, and rationalized a rapidly growing body of new ideas. The objective of this document is to define and locate environmental concerns within the realm of corporate strategy.
