Overview: Many publications and managers refer to life cycle terms. Unfortunately they are often mixed up, because they are not known, wrongly understood or unclear to people using life cycle terminology. This report introduces into three different life cycle concepts and clarifies the used life cycle terms. The first analyzed concept is the product life cycle, which is used in economics and marketing. The second one is life cycle costing and originates from engineering economics and management accounting. The third is called life cycle assessment and is an analysis method for environmental management. The intention of this report is to clarify the terminology and the concepts behind these life cycle expressions, to ease understanding and to avoid confusion and misunderstandings about these concepts and the terminology.
