Overview: A substantial body of literature exists on the role of innovation in stimulating growth. This paper examines the link between innovation, marketing strategy, the external economic environment and culture. It considers the experience of Hungary, a post-socialist country, which acceded into the EU on May 1, 2004, as an interesting environment to examine the relationship between these variables. The preliminary findings of qualitative research in this area are presented and these findings are extended to address potential implications for public sector initiatives in two areas; program design and management education and training.
