Overview: Retail banking is one of the largest industries both in terms of value added and employment. It also accounts for over 10 percent of national IT spending, making it especially interesting for the examination of the role of IT innovations. Despite improved labor productivity in retail banking from 1994 to 2000, France and Germany are still behind the U.S. This paper depicts that while a range of improvements are necessary to revitalize German and French retail banks, four areas represent the highest priorities: information technology adoption, mixing up the payments, demanding customers, and consolidation proliferation.
